This is an exciting opportunity in Milton Keynes for a Senior Electrochemistry Engineer.

Cummins Electrified Power are a leading provider of flexible battery solutions for demanding automotive and power applications .

Your impact will be seen in these and other ways:

  • The role of the Senior Electrochemistry Engineer is to enable a high standard towards testing of lithium-ion batteries and support of various internal and customer-oriented projects.

  • Provide technical expertise, utilising detailed knowledge and understanding of electrochemical properties and materials chemistry of Li-ion energy storage cell technology, to provide support and assistance for Customer, R&D and new product introduction projects.

  • Participate within a team of electrochemistry engineers and technicians to support the electrochemical characterisation of Li-ion cell technology for the purposes of parameterisation.

  • Support R&D projects in order to deliver against agreed budget, time and scope parameters.

  • Collaborate with advanced mechanical engineering team to perform in-house research, testing and analysis, writing technical reports and participating in review meetings.

  • Perform trouble shooting and problem resolution activities requiring an in depth understanding of cell chemistry and technology, and battery manufacturing processes.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Component Material and Process Selection – the ability to evaluate component requirements (form and function) to identify base material and processing options;

  • Background in manufacturing feasibility, process material and selection based on best-fit option(s) aligned to requirements;

  • Experience of specifying and managing effective test plans to validate selected material and processes against specification documents.

  • Exposure to simulation and design analysis methods using Ansys.

  • Extensive background of enclosure design using PTC Creo.

  • Experience of using non-destructive test (NDT) methods and laboratory equipment.

  • Full understanding of thermal properties, vibration analysis and underbonnet packaging.

  • Experience of using DFMEA to ensure reliability and product safety; analysis of component failures to understand material limitations, manufacturing constraints and potential design risks.

  • Material Characterization – Interpretation of mechanical, chemical, microstructural and physical properties using laboratory equipment to confirm compliance to print, and correlation of these properties with field or component test results to determine robustness;

  • Definition of appropriate material characterisation schedule using correct laboratory equipment to ensure requirements are met.

  • Joining and Bonding Science – the choice of appropriate bonding technique considering material type(s), applied loads and available bonding area to generate a durable bonded joint; process and inspection specifications taking base materials, bonding materials and bonding equipment into account to ensure sufficient and consistent quality; application to multi-functional components to establish a spatially efficient joint that doesn't require disassembly.

Required Education, Licenses or Certifications

  • University degree in Automotive or Aeronautical Engineering required. Masters degrees are preferred, or potentially PhD qualification in a materials-related field,

  • OR, equivalent vocational experience in a relevant role

Compensation and Benefits

In return we can offer a base salary of £45-56,000 (dependent on experience).
