This is an exciting opportunity in Milton Keynes for a Welding & Joining Process Engineer.

Your impact will be seen in these and other ways:

  • You will lead the assessment and selection of optimum welding and joining processes and technologies for the Battery Pack and associated components, for example joining battery tabs to busbars and fabricated battery frame assemblies.

  • In addition, you will co-ordinate and lead a small team in implementing test plans & procedures for material & joining technology validation

  • You’ll develop innovative solutions from initial idea through to functional prototype as quickly as possible. The process must include sense-checks of feasibility through, for example, design studies, modelling and simulation. These demonstrations can be virtual or physical.

  • You will author & champion internal design rules/standards for material and joining applications on Battery Enclosures, and ensure department-wide adherence to these standards.

  • You will perform comparative analysis and performance evaluation of various joining technologies, such as remote laser welding (RLW), resistance spot welding (RSW), and self-piercing riveting (SPR), MIG welding, CMT welding.

  • You will perform evaluation of joint quality using metallographic inspection, tensile & bending tests, weld coupons and parametric studies.

  • You will also characterize joint fatigue strength, residual stresses, micro-hardness & temperature dependency of joint strength (HAZ) for virtual simulation correlation as well as design suitability. Knowledge of ANSYS (or similar simulation software) systems beneficial.

  • You will identify engineering solutions for the joining of copper and steel, and other dissimilar materials.


Skills and Experience Required:

  • Qualified as a Welding Engineer (desirable)

  • Welding experience, metal forming / stamping, machine building

  • Hands-on experience with welding (spot, resistance & fusion), adhesive bonding & sealing in industrialized, high-volume applications.

  • Experience of specifying and managing effective test plans to validate selected material and processes against specification documents.

  • Planning of welding activities

  • Liaison with certification authorities and inspection agencies

  • Preparation of project welding procedures

  • Hands-on engineering and systems testing

  • Experience in Hybrid/Electric powertrains and battery systems.

Required Education, Licenses or Certifications

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Automotive or Aeronautical Engineering required.

  • OR, equivalent vocational experience in a relevant role

Compensation and Benefits

Salary: £45,000-£55,000

  • Defined contribution pension scheme - company contributions up to 9%

  • Annual bonus plan - target 8% (based upon company performance)
